Evil : external mechanism, internal mixture
 
 

Weil eloquently describes in Pensées sans ordre concernant l'amour de Dieu (Thoughts without order concerning the love of God), in an essay entitled L'amour de Dieu et le malheur (P87-89) (The Love of God and Malheur):
  Cet univers où nous vivons, dont nous sommes une parcelle, est cette distance mise par l'Amour divin entre Dieu et Dieu. Nous sommes un point dans cette distance. L'espace, le temps, et le mécanisme qui gouverne la matière sont cette distance. Tout ce que nous nommons le mal n'est que ce mécanisme. (P96) The universe where we live, of which we are a parcel, is this distance put by divine Love between God and God. We are a point in this distance. Space, time, and the mechanism that governs matter are this distance. Everything that we name evil is nothing but this mechanism.
  The beauty of evil
  Toutes les horreurs qui se produisent en ce monde sont comme les plis imprimés aux vagues par la pesanteur. C'est pourquoi elles enferment une beauté. Parfois un poème, tel que l'Iliade, rend cette beauté sensible. (P98) All the horrors which occur in this world are like the folds imprinted on waves by gravety. That is why they contain a beauty. Sometimes a poem, like the Illiad, make this beauty perceptible.
  In the essay Pensées sans ordre concernant l'amour de Dieu (Thoughts without order concerning the love of God) Weil comes to define evil as a mixture of suffering and sin.
  Tout le monde sent le mal, en a horreur et voudrait s'en délivrer. Le mal n'est ni la souffrance ni le péché, c'est l'un et l'autre à la fois, quelque chose de commun à l'un et l'autre; car ils sont liés, le péché fait souffrir et la souffrance rend mauvais, et ce mélange indissoluble de souffrance et de péché est le mal où nous sommes malgré nous et où nous avons horreur de nous trouver. Everyone feels evil, is horrified by it and wants to be delivered from it. Evil is neither suffering nor sin, it's both at the same time, something that is common to both; for they are linked, sin makes you suffer and suffering makes you evil, and this indissoluble mixture of suffering and sin is the evil that we are steeped in despite ourselves and that we are horrified to find ourselves in.
